(above) The Salisbury Institute building where Fred's Van arrives every Sunday at 6:00pm. Diners at the free meal include a number of homeless people sleeping on concrete or grass. One rough sleeping man has been described as "blue in the face" when he gets out of bed. The Housing Trust is across the road. They have dozens of houses and units left empty for months at a time.
Meat eating diners fooled by plant stew at Fred’s Van
No meat was served, but few knew this at Fred’s Van at Elizabeth at a recent Sunday lunch. The sausage dish was made from plants; the hamburger stew was from plants and the meat stew was actually plant stew. Apart from one man who thought the sausages didn’t taste right, the other diners were unaware and unbelieving the “meat” was made from plants.
The Mousse dessert was made from milk. I was too late so “G” gave me his. I’d had a migraine and couldn’t remember anyone’s name. Last month a migraine left me not able to remember any of my passwords and my secret password book is in code and I couldn’t remember the code. Once the migraine passes, my memory returns. No one seemed surprised by this as half of Fred’s Van clients have serious disabilities. Diners rushed the racks of rotting vegetables. Lemons were snapped up. Most diners are not drug addicts, but even the addicts know that fruit and vegetables are good for you. The bread was old and there was twice the amount that we could take. People on the dole and paying private rent have nearly nothing left for food so Fred’s Van is a valuable resource. Yet it is hard to believe this is happening in Australia, especially while corrupt officials stage “homelessness” conferences in expensive venues. Rock Solid was there. He kicked Mick of Mick and Denise in the back of Mick’s bad knee. Mick retreated behind a car. Rock Solid was joking and didn’t realise Mick had a bad knee. Rosie was with Mr Solid. She is no longer called Twitchy. She is actually a nice woman. She is polite even when she dislikes someone. George the Elder was there. I couldn’t remember his name due to my migraine. He said Anglicare was installing an outdoor seating area for tenants at his retirement complex. This is after building fences between the units to stop tenants snooping on each other. George also said that an astronaut who landed on the moon had a special message he broadcast back to earth. The message was to his neighbour and said that he could go next door and have sex with the astronaut’s wife. This is what George the Elder told us. Fred’s Van Elizabeth Sunday St Vincent de Paul Centre, 8 Langford Drive, Elizabeth (near Elizabeth railway station). 12:00 noon Sundays. 6:00pm Wednesdays. Free. 36 seat restaurant plus outdoor seating. Much improved soup, main meal, sandwiches, dessert and coffee. Staff don’t rush the diners. The excellent salt and pepper shakers were knocked off by clients so now they use glass jars with holes in the lids. Limited fruit, vegetable and bread takeaways, which are also sometimes available from Op Shop most weekdays. Better food and purchase cards are given away from their Conference Centre back of the Op Shop, but require an interview. 30 July 2019
Cold hot food at Salisbury Fred’s Van
The Maranello pizza arrived hot, but was served below body temperature. The woman who lives in a Housing Trust unit amidst drug dealers said she hadn’t eaten properly for days due to anxiety. She said the sausage stew was excellent, but was cold. The plates being stored in a cold room didn’t help. What is wrong with Fred’s Van that they cannot even serve food either hot or warm? Where is that St Vincent de Paul C.E.O., David Wark (Wark-Shy)? Where is the Fred’s Van manager? How do these fellows fill in their time? Is there no quality control? The volunteers work hard preparing the meal. Some begin in the morning, but they need better coordination. Even the salt and pepper shakers don’t get filled regularly. And the salt used is coarse cooking salt that won’t fit through the holes. It’s time Mr Wark-Shy got out of head office and headed up to Salisbury. Orange Sky Laundry didn’t turn up for the second week in a row. They made a last minute decision not to come. To hell with the clients they claim to help with positive conversations. What’s wrong with Orange Sky management? It is downright rude to broadcast a service then not turn up. It’s cruel. Not many people arrived for the free meal. This meant there was adequate seating for everyone though one man stands in a corner and eats. The chairs are crowded too close together. He lives outside and to suddenly be put shoulder to shoulder with strangers is too much for him. The free food room still had 30 people passing through. There were six eggs per person, orange flavoured sugar-free Coke, old bread and three or four half-rotten fruits and vegetables. Someone said that Bill from the Food Barn was dead and that his son had tried to kill himself. Jason MS was there with new batteries in his N.D.I.S. mobility scooter. He said it took three weeks for them to be fitted. The man who wore a moon boot last year was there with an artificial lower leg. One-eyed Steve said he’s getting surgery next week, earlier than expected. And despite these complaints, it was a pleasant gathering and the staff did a wonderful job. Fred’s Van is also the most reliable food service for homeless people in South Australia. Fred’s Van Salisbury Salisbury Institute building, 17 Wiltshire St, Salisbury (next to PBA-FM radio station). 6:00pm Sunday. Soup, good main meal, dessert, coffee and lousy takeaways. Free. No I.D. required. Overcrowded and rushed. Free Orange Sky Laundry 4:30-6:30pm. Fascinating people. Beautiful stone building. Ugly surveillance cameras. Decent toilets. Decent staff. 30 July 2019

(above) The Adelaide City Council publishes a guide to services available for homeless people in the CBD. But it doesn’t warn that most joints have little to offer other than a referral to another agency and an entry into the Eternal Shame File. It takes skill and experience to negotiate the minefield of the homeless helping industry.
